This will enhance your enjoyment of the ride and deepen your connection with your surroundings. When following a route on a phone, a device like a Garmin, or printed turb-by-turn instructions, try to remember to look up and look around to get a sense of the lie of the land as you pass through. Phone navigation apps are great but it’s probably safest to carry a paper map and/or the turn-by-turn route instructions supplied with each ride as well, or to use a dedicated GPS navigation device like a Garmin or a Wahoo. GPS can drain batteries fast, so it’s worth taking a paper map as a backup, at least until you get an idea of how long your device’s battery will last when being used for GPS navigation.

Whichever app you use, it’s best to download the base maps onto your device before you go, in case you are in a place with no phone service.

Outdooractive is popular and feature-packed navigation app for both iPad, iPhone and Android devices. I also like RideWithGPS though it lacks Outdooractive’s option to have Ordnance Survey base maps. If you want a really simple phone app for following a GPX track, Bike GPX is good, and available for both Android and iPhone. Your app will determine your choice of base maps. How this is done depends on the app you’re using. To do this, download the GPX file from the route page and import it to your device. With the right app they can be used as a navigational aid. This document shows only some of the functionality supported by the GPX format - for example, there are no waypoints or extensions, and this is part of a track, not a route. Dates and times are not local time, but instead are Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) using ISO 8601 format. Latitude and longitude are expressed in decimal degrees, and elevation in meters, both using the WGS 84 datum. Some vendors, such as Humminbird and Garmin, use extensions to the GPX format for recording street address, phone number, business category, air temperature, depth of water, and other parameters. The minimum properties for a GPX file are latitude and longitude for every single point. the GPX file may contain both route and track so that a program can get precise points from the track even if it has no access to a vector map.The GPX points may contain the text of those instructions.
